I've been here both for lunch and dinner, and I definitely prefer lunch. The menu is more expansive, has a lot of combo options, and very well priced. It was decently busy but service was still great and timely. I have only dined in for lunch, but they also do take out, which I will definitely take advantage of next time I'm short on time. We also went for dinner on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very empty. That kind of detracts from the experience in my opinion, but we got over it quickly. We sat at the sushi bar in front of the head sushi chef and got a lot of attention and even a free dish to try, as he was testing it out as a new menu item. The rolls were very good, but I thought lacked some innovation and the menu was fairly small. They only seemed to have the staple items in the sushi bar - salmon, tuna, yellowtail, etc. Nothing new or exciting, but maybe that was just out of sight. I might give it some time before I come back for dinner... I of course yelped the restaurant before going, and noticed a lot of photos of hamachi kama and grilled squid. We were very excited for both, but didn't see either on the menu. When we asked the server about it, they just said "no, we don't have that". Kind of confusing and I totally understand if they don't serve it regularly, but she kind of made me feel stupid for asking.... like no, it's not on the menu so of course we don't have it. Strange. I almost whipped out my phone to show her photos but refrained :)

Yellowtail is awesome. But expect to pay a price for that awesomeness. We paid $50 bucks for a simple dinner for two - 2 appetizers, 1 roll, and an order of nigiri. That price doesn't even include any booze. The vibe is hip, the service is fast (else were in an out in 30 minutes) and the fish is quality.

I love this place so much! Food is fast and service is impeccable. The staff there is friendly and attentive. Chef Masato is so good at what he does. The hostess and waitresses are amazing . I am so glad I stumbled across this place. I recommend trying the ninja roll. The sushi is AMAZING. The sashimi fresh and tasteful. The feel of the restaurant is so professional sweet and elegant. This is definitely my new favorite sushi restaurant.

This place sucks. Literally the worst. Went at lunch time because that's when the reviews said it was good and no one was there. Sushi sucked. Sashimi was tiny. Chicken was not chicken. Even the rice was bad.

Sushi is a competitive section of the restaurant game in Utah, there are literally dozens of places to get 3 star sushi: so Yellowfin has its work cut out already. The ambiance is really comfortable, the service is a little clunky; but new restaurants have new servers, and it takes everyone a some time to hit their stride. That being said, it took 20 minutes to get rolls with 2 other tables in the entire place. The rolls were delicious, but for $13 each they better be. Not as good as yellowtail in Sugarhouse, which is a actually cheaper too. This place has a killer location, and maybe a happy hour would fill the place... Bottom line: good, not great sushi, but overpriced.

Good sushi rolls for a reasonable price. The server was friendly. Surprisingly, the restaurant was a little slow. I would definitely eat here again.

Went here for a quick lunch with my teenage daughter, food was delicious, fast, and ambiance was perfect. I would absolutely recommend!

Awful experience, and partial awful on the food (since we only got part of our order). After being seated, waited about 10 minutes before our drink order was taken. Our waitress never introduced herself, just stood with her notepad. We ordered one sushi roll and three appetizers, nothing very complex. After 20 minutes our sushi roll came out (tuna avocado, which was very good). Our tempura came out 10 minutes later and was lukewarm and soggy. At that point we were reaching the one hour mark and had to leave for a show, so we asked for our check. No apology from the waitress, who then tried to charge us for the food we never received. Tables around us also seemed to have issues, as the group next to us received two of their meals while the third person waited another 10-15 minutes. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in awhile. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that it was an off night, but I don't intend to ever try going back.

This place is truly overpriced for the food they serve. I ordered a sushi appetizer ($10) and a tonkatsu dinner course ($18). The Japanese sushi chef that made the nigiri sushi really needs to study the art of making sushi some more. His nigiri sushi was compacted too much making the rice dense and textureless. The sashimi cuts that sat on top of the nigiri was thin but fresh. Overall, the sushi appetizer here wasn't worth the price they asked for. The tonkatsu dinner was really sad. The tonkatsu was served on top of lettuce leaves with tonkatsu sauce on the side. The dish was also served with onion tempura which was a nice touch but lack of a tempura dipping sauce made for a very dry dish. The tonkatsu was dry and overcooked since their slices of pork was super thin (about 3mm thick.) I needed to dunk it into the tonkatsu sauce just to get it down my throat. The dinner plate was served only with rice after I asked about it. This was the first Japanese restaurant I've been to that didn't serve at least miso soup with their dinners. Overall, I regretted eating at this place. Wish I could turn back time and eat anywhere else but at this place. I've had grocery store bentos taste better than what they've served here.

context: the takashi version of shogun was our go to neighborhood sushi place. you know, the place with good food that remembers your name and that you don't have to wait forever to get a table or place at the bar. after one visit to yellowtail i was happily surprised to find good quality fish and nicely presented plates. throw a friendly, talented chef behind the bar (masato) and we might have, after all this time, a neighborhood joint to call home again. the decor is really nice and tastefully done. it is a relief after the dreary end to the shogun era. a couple of my barometers of quality is aji and uni. didn't have aji, but the uni was fresh and flavorful. the house presentation of scallop sashimi was another big hit. the final plate of sashimi de foie gras was an unexpected, but fabulous chef's recommendation. i can't really comment on the quality of rolls. i tend to stick with nigiri and sashimi. only repeat visits will tell, but it looks promising. give it a try. cheers

So I rarely give one star to a restaurant and honestly, I REALLY wanted to like this place. But after giving Yellowtail a few chances and being disappointed every time, I'd rather give my business elsewhere. It's such a shame because after being renovated from the old Shogun, I had really high hopes for this place. The interior is beautiful and it's in a killer location. I'm convinced that's the only reason people are still going here (or they are tourists and don't know any better). On each occasion that I've been here the service has been slow, and less than enthusiastic. That's your first problem. I hate bad service. Second, their menu had very few rolls and nothing exciting on it. The rolls I did have were seriously lacking creativity and flavor. To make matters worse, they somewhat recently downsized their already crappy menu! So now there are a handful of rolls, a few appetizers and sashimi/nigiri. So boring!! And most of the appetizers are in the $12-$15 range which is COMPLETELY not worth it for what they are serving up. Next time I'll definitely head half a block west and go to Takashi. Unless Yellowtail makes some serious changes to the menu and service, I can't see this place lasting much longer unfortunately. Good luck with all that Yellowtail.

Went here with 5 of my girlfriends for dinner on a Sat eve. Restaraunt was EMPTY at 9:00 for starters, but had a good atmosphere so we stayed. Food was was ok, nothing to write home about. I did have some friends who ordered the Agedashi Tofu and raved about it. Miso was decent and rolls were just OK but on the smaller size. Now onto the service...a straight D-. We placed our order and waited for over an hour to get our food in an empty restaurant. Our server was quiet and sweet, but just seemed awfully confused. After an hour of waiting she had forgot to entirely put in two of the rolls we ordered. She did comp a glass of wine for my friend which was very nice. However at the end of the meal she handed me a post it note and told me to write down what we individually had ordered! I mean one can only laugh at that one. Service is terribly lacking here. Sadly, we won't be back

New shogun! Shogun was the very first sushi restaurant in SLC and the original owner still owns yellowtail. FYI takashi started at shogun more than twenty years ago. Don't get me wrong takashi is amazing, I love the box roll but 1.5 hour wait is too long! Eat at yellowtail we were seated almost immediately and the sushi was great!

I will start off saying that I would not recommend this restaurant since there are so many other wonderful restaurants close by. There was no one in this place on a Friday night. Tell tale sign of a lame establishment to me, but we were really hungry for sushi, so we decided to give it a try. As soon as we sat down our server was super awkward to begin with. He knew nothing about the wine list and brought me the wrong sushi order. When I told him it was wrong, he apologized and said he'd have my sushi right up. So we waited for about 15 mins. Then he came by and said he put two other table's orders before mine, so it would be up in a few mins. WTH? We waited about 20 mins after that then just left. The sashimi my boyfriend ordered was good, but unfortunately I never got my order and there was only two more tables in the whole place!! Needless to say, I won't be back. I'll be going to Eva's next door, because I know that place is legit.

MASATU is the head SuChef! He is super talented!!!!! We sat up to the bar and had him choose what to make us... So he did a few different rolls and nigiri! Great sushi, great atmosphere. Nice enough place to dress up, but definitely didn't feel like we needed to. We will be back for sure!

Seriously, the best sushi experience OF MY LIFE! My husband and I went, for Valentine's Day, and we couldn't have been happier! We only ordered Ebi, Gyoza, and Miso, from the menu, everything else came from our Sushi Chef just having fun. It was FANTASTIC! Everything he gave us was delicious, even things I NEVER would've thought to order! Made us 2 rolls, after hearing our likes and dislikes, and kept making little "one bite" things for us to try while we were waiting! It was delicious and fun, I loved every second and have been craving it ever since!

The food was delicious. The sushi chef the night we went took his art seriously and it was a beautiful presentation as well as tasty. Although a little slower to come out all of us in the group agreed that the food was worth the time. The problem our group had was the pace and quality of the service. The server was incredibly slow, like 15 minutes to drop off the check slow. Then when processing the checks took another 15 minutes during which time the hostess walked by, looked down on us and said nothing. No apology from the server or hostess. If there is problem or you are slow with something then say so and that's understandable, but ignoring it just makes for a bad experience.

Quite, clean, and simple...Yellowtail didn't blow my mind but the Udon bowl and nigiri sampler I ordered didn't disappoint either. Convenient location and moderate pricing (expect to pay close to $50.00 for two).

Ordered Agedashi Tofu, a couple of rolls and sashimi. The atmosphere was really nice. This is a remodel of the Shogun sushi place that was here previously. The food was good, not great. The Agedashi Tofu was made fresh and crispy. The Sashimi looked great and was definitely fresh. The rolls were smaller than expected but still tasted pretty good. One of the biggest problems with the restaurant is that it took 20 minutes for our food to come even though we were the only customers there at the time. I felt that we were just sitting there and it shouldn't have taken us 90 minutes to order, eat and pay (especially since it was just us). I think when new restaurants pop up we all need to give them a little slack til they figure things out on their end but overall it was a pretty good experience

First, I ordered sake and they served it in a glass cup (cocktail style). Weird! I ordered the hamachi kama, grilled squid, and the poki martini. I enjoyed the hamachi kama but the rest was ok. The grilled squid had a sweet eel suave that did not pair well with the natural smokiness of the squid. The tentacles were over done, making them very chewy. The poki martini was pretty much mixed fish tar tar with no poki-like flavoring that I'm use to. I'll give it another go, since they have a ginormous menu.

I ordered Pork Katsu Donbori to go. I will start with the positives first 1. Pricing was right. $8 is a fair price for this dish. 2. Salad dressing was good. 3. Portion size was not bad compare to other japanese restaurants. Now the cons - Waiting time was quite long. I think they were under staffed or something. We waited about 35 mins for to go lunch. - There is mysterious blue water droplets in my salad. Blue as in blue powerade looking water. I have no idea what it was and why it was in my salad. - The food itself had tons of soy sauce. It was 4-5 times more than usual. If you were to calculate the sodium level of my dish to dv it would be way off the chart. - Dish was very watery. Onions were not caramalized. Overall it is a cheap stir fry with tons of salt and water.

Aaron made me two variations of a custom spicy octopus role that were both terrific. Enjoyed the conversation, ambiance, and food. I'm in SLC a lot and will definitely eat here again. Thanks for a great meal!

This was the best sushi. The spicy samurai is just right. Creativity and aesthetics meet with original ingredients. Masterpieces

I wasn't that impressed with the food here. Everything was just okay. We started with grilled squid which was good. I had the kiku special which came with nigiri sushi and a spicy tuna roll. My friend had a special roll. The rolls had so much rice I ended taking most of it off. My spicy tuna roll also had lettuce in it. It was a little bit weird. The ratio between tuna and rice was 1:3 which seems way off to me. The service was really great though.

First-rate sushi downtown The restaurant has a master sushi chef consulting on the menu and working the sushi bar. Staff is plentiful, friendly and efficient. The restaurant has a fresh, elegant look without being overtly trendy. Try the chirashi or sake oyako don from the menu or ask the sushi chef to prepare a meal of chef's choice - omakase.

Terrific food, very tasty and reasonable priced. I have had varies sukiyaki before at a lot of places across the world and this is the BEST sukiyaki ever. Friendly waitress.

We really enjoyed our dinner! We ordered the shrimp and calamari salad, gyoza, firecracker roll, and the park city roll. The food came out as each item was prepared and we were served quickly. The service was attentive and the food was fantastic! Keep room for the mochi and tempura cream puff ice cream - it was unbelievably good! We loved the atmosphere and the prices were very reasonable. We've had sushi all around the world and would say that Yellowtail is top class. We will be back!

Visiting from Nashville and found this restaurant. Very clean. Great atmosphere. Great food. Sat up at the sushi bar as Aaron fixed our Dragon Rolls and a mix of sashimi. Well done. Highly recommend this place.

Stopped in and was able to get table right away. Jennifer was great with recommendations such as the SLC roll with salmon. Park City another great one as was the Shrimp Tempura. The beer was all from Japan, offered in tall bottles , hit the spot on this hot night.

This newly remodeled space had the potential to become the next downtown sushi hotspot. Alas, we were very disappointed. The Firecracker roll was pretty good, although the pieces were cut quite large and were heavy on the rice. We also had the Hamachi cheek which was fishy and unappetizing. The beef combo was okay, but it did come with a generous portion of sashimi (salmon, tuna, hamachi). Given the fantastic nearby alternatives (Takashi, Sapa), I doubt we will go back

I had one of the best meals in recent memory here last night. I've had sushi across the country and was impressed by the quality of the fish and the skill of the chefs. I recommend sitting at the bar and watching them work. I prefer traditional Sushi and ordered the Sashimi platter, Tekka Maki and Kappa Maki rolls and tasted quality with every bite. The preparations and techniques were just right, bringing out the best flavor without ever overpowering the taste of the fish. The ama ebi shrimp came with the fried heads, a deliciously crunchy treat. If you've never tried it you're missing out. I was happy and thought I was done when they offered dessert, sushi French toast, not on the menu but worth asking for, the perfect sweet savory end to a great meal.

I had had such a great experience at Yellowtail...until yesterday. I dined here a couple of times, and my 2 most fav rolls were Shogun & Oiran (with mango on top). They had been absolutely tasty and amazing. Yesterday however we came here for our date night, ordered the 2 same rolls and they were NOTHING like what we'd been served before. At first I thought I ordered the wrong rolls - the sauce was different, as well as the presentation, and everything somehow affected the quality of the fish as well. I actually asked the server if they changed the chef (I thought they have a head chef who decides on how all the rolls should be made). I was given the answer that they change chefs everyday and the rolls might be different. This was not a very good explanation since what is the point of being a restaurant if you can't keep the consistency of the food??? Some people come back just for some certain dishes and Yellowtail can't even live up to that. A complete disappointment! Spent $70 and feeling completely unsatisfied! WILL NOT BE COMING BACK!

Great sushi! I was in SLC for a conference with some coworkers and we tried to get into a 'fancier' sushi place across the street. After being told there was an hour wait, we stumbled upon Yellowtail and saw only a few reviews on Yelp...but decided to take our chances. Soooo glad we did! Apparently they've only been open a few weeks - so don't think the lack of reviews is a reflection of the food. Extremely fresh fish...#nomnom
